Photos from CASBS Symposium on "The Effects of Technology on Human Interactions"
On March 6, 2018, CASBS presented a panel conversation featuring two 2017-18 CASBS fellows – sociologist of technology Judy Wajcman and linguist Sarah Ogilvie – as well as CASBS faculty fellow Abraham Verghese, a physician and novelist renowned for his examinations of the human side of medicine. They discussed modern technology’s transformational impact on social interactions, including 1) the role of medical practitioners, recipients of care, and their relations with each other; 2) the values, mindsets, and norms of people born after the introduction of the World Wide Web, as reflected through language usage; and 3) shifting individual, cultural, and organizational conceptions of time, time management, efficiency, and speed in advanced capitalist societies. These focal points facilitated a broader dialogue with the audience about the relationship between recent technological advances and the human experience.
