Join Us in Building CASBS for the Future

 

When the Center was founded in the 1950s, interdisciplinary research meant encouraging synergies among scholars primarily doing individual work. The Center’s architecture reflected this, with common spaces for scholars to interact and then retreat to their individual studies, frequently incorporating cross-disciplinary insights into their own work. 

As CASBS evolved, it recognized that contemporary challenges require more diverse perspectives and deeper interdisciplinary engagement. Today, it hosts multi-year collaborative programs and convenes teams with the aim of achieving social-scientific breakthroughs that no one scholar could achieve independently. The new building, the first addition to the CASBS campus since its inception, seeks to meet these demands and define what a twenty first-century incubator of advanced social inquiry should be.

We launched a planning process for our new building in 2015, led by the Sara Miller McCune Director at the time, Margaret Levi, and dedicated board members. A successful fundraising effort, powered by the extraordinary generosity of board members, former fellows, and private foundations, secured the majority of the funds needed for the $8M budget. We are grateful to the many donors who made this vision a reality.

The building opened in November 2023 and we celebrated with a dedication ceremony in November.
